Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

Indeed. Why bother with writing an app? VNC should work fine. You can even use Xzibit (https://github.com/tthurman/xzibit) to share only the web browser window instead of the whole desktop. What...

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

Neat, but how will you pass links on the png'ified-page back to the server end?

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

The N900 browser has quite simple solution. Trying to run modern browser will never work - the device does not have enough RAM and fast CPU for it.

But the solution is quite simple - use fast...

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

I wish there were more development with the Cherry Trail Atom AMD64 devices, drivers are a mess and I am not sure there is one with complete sound, WiFI, BT, sensors, camera, GPS, and of course...

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

As sad as it is I am thinking about this more and more :(
(especially as my modem starts to die).
Carrying two devices all the time is just not convenient.

Re: idea: Update browser engine on N900

Does anyone have the .deb for the Chromium build a few years back? It used to be on the repos before it was pulled for some reason.(not that that would even bring us up to date)
The link on the...

Re: idea: Update browser engine on N900

I disagree. Chromium is a bad browser, no matter where.
Why? Because it follows the Google philosophy of being technically open source while at the same time doing everything to lock people out of...

Re: How many all telephony functions disabled phones you own?

Your poll is hopelessly skewed. A missing option for "none" gives the false impression that everyone has at least one broken unit. I have three, all working. Two more passed through my hands, both...

Re: N900 is a target platform for PostMarketOS !

As I explained to you in IRC/Matrix (assuming it was you based on the tone here), we are not explicitly targetting old devices. The only reason the current "supported devices" are older is because...

Re: N900 is a target platform for PostMarketOS !

Well telephony is obviously a priority, and it should be Relatively Straight Forward(TM) using ofono. I just haven't gotten around to giving it a serious go-ahead yet since I'm working on other...

Re: [ANNOUNCE] COMPCACHE on kernel-power (now with notifications)

I would be quite sure it does.

Writing to the SD Card is quite slow,
slow enough that even the slow processor of the N900 should apply the simple compression at a much faster rate.

Also...

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

I was merely talking about the capabilities of the HW and the base OS as supplied by Nokia. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.
In that regard (HW+OS) the N900 is superior to the N8x0 in every...

Re: N900 daily Work in 2017?

The N900 should be able to run anything the N8x0 can run.

In terms of chroots there are three differences between the two devices that might be relevant:

1. The N8x0 have even older kernels....

Re: The choice of OS of the new QWERTY device project

As long as there's a non-android option, I'm in. I've not seen or tried Lineage OS, but mainstream android devices leave me cold.

Regardless, this is fantastic work Chen, and I wish you all the...

Re: The choice of OS of the new QWERTY device project

Here is the specs of this device. This is not a fanboy dream - we already have working - stablised - debugged solution. It's real.

This is also not 100% confirmed and subject to further change....

Re: N900 is a target platform for PostMarketOS !

What's all this talk about outdated operating systems?! Ok, ok, some of their work, which has been upstreamed to kernel.org and/or the maemo.org wiki, has been extremely useful :)

In any case, I'm...

Re: N900 is a target platform for PostMarketOS !

I have no idea about Mer, but I'm finding that the N900 has very good support for its hardware in the mainline kernel. We're definitely standing on the shoulders of giants here :)
