I keep my N900 solely for pidgin, and now because of this issue here...

I believe I also experienced this issue, and IIRC this is fixed by directly editing ~/.profiled/custom.ini or just use another ringtone (happened quite long time ago, so I forgot the detail)

No. Actually i was referring to the latter where you use your friend's androod to register your own number. But I have no idea that you can't register 2 numbers with same IMEI

I don't know if you mean "CSSU testing has desktop rotation enabled BY DEFAULT" or not, because I use CSSU stable and yes I do have desktop rotation

Basically open your phonebook, look for some contacts that you believe is registered to Whatsapp, and see if their numbers are...

But since XMPP uses UTF-8 for its data communication, so when you see EE 80 85, it's actually a 16-bit unicode data with value of E0...
