Try to remove your IM account, create it again and reboot the system. I had a problem with the skype account and that fixed it.

Yep, it shouldn't do that. I'm not sure if a faulty battery can cause that (are you using the original battery?) but anyway you should contact the service.

OK, I see. The easiest way still is probably to find an available wifi connection somewhere and use that to download the applications.

You don't need pc-suite for installing applications, they can be installed directly from the application manager in your n900. You need pc-suite e.g. for using your n900 as a gprs modem for your...
