Agree. Let libre-chess be in extras, for all versions of Fremantle, uncluding thumb when extras-thumb is opened later. Operating system doesn't have to include file explorer, internet browser, chess...

It's "osso-chess-ui". In Extras, more likely. Just force it to reinstall. Probably:
apt-get install --reinstall osso-chess-ui

The first 3 files are colored blue which I believe means they are symlinked but I don't know how to find where they really are.

I think other people with a N900 got this to work as well without any problems.

All I did was change the graphic and sound files.

I'm not smart enough to do anything more than this. :(

I'm using Maemo 4 by the way.

MOD EDIT 22-04-2013: Since the migration is completed, the temporary repos are not needed. It should be fine using the default repos.

There have been at least 4 threads with people complaining...

For future searchers this dbus command can be used to call applications.
Replace the value in the string comments with the application you wish to execute.

You typed it wrong.
Do not use /usr/bin to call, this is dbus.
Copy and paste if you can.
