I had a similar problem, when i checked my isp's connection settings on my N900 in the proxy settings tab the settings were disabled, I enabled them and no further problems.

I don't know about doing it with bluetooth but if your laptop has wifi then all you have to do is enable internet connection sharing and then create an ad hock wireless network on the laptop and...
