We have the WIndows/Linux PC UI somewhat working now using Qt4.5. You can get it from the "fremantle" branch at http://git.remlab.net/git/vlc.git/

Better than CLI, but still far from satisfactory....

I have no accurate statistics, but I believe mplayer to be the most popular media player on Linux. OTOH, gstreamer would most probably claim to be "the common way" for being endorsed by FreeDesktop...

Beware that you are quoting the VLC 1.1.0 changelog here. VLC 1.0.3 does not work on N900 or not well at all.

VLC is a media playback and streaming library and a set of user interfaces...

Kernel 2.6.28 already has network namespaces indeed, however they do not support sysfs. Thus, it is not usable as is in Fremantle. In theory, you could back-port sysfs namespaces patches from 2.6.29....

I doubt that the whole thing would build from within the official Maemo infrastructure. The VLC build system requires network access to fetch external sources. This is fixable, but it needs tedious...
