Try this:
On the Win2k Server click Start menu->Run Tscc.msc
Double click RDP-Tcp and goto the logon settings tab
Make sure Always prompt for password is not checked.

Just for comparison, transferring with wget from a local web server tops out at about 800 KB/sec for me. The cpu never tops out doing this (unlike when you try to download from the browser)

I think I've found a bug. Somehow I deleted the first profile, which was also the default profile, and rdesktop wouldn't load anymore. I then installed gedit and load_prof was set to the deleted...

This is making me wonder if the four test points on the left side underneath the battery cover are usb lines. IIRC the 770 had serial lines under the battery door.

I never had the unit die on me overnight. Then again, I always put the cover back over it which ensures that the unit is as close to off without actually being off.
