Re: So... Microsoft finally purchases Nokia.

So, Elop's mission for Microsoft is accomplished.

Nokia is dead and the re-possessed corpse (IP, patents) can be a very useful tool for bullying the remaining mobile industry.

Partnering with...

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

Well there are still manufacturing facilities outside Europe in free countries, and with the cost of manufacturing rising in a certain large east Asian empire why wouldn't modern largely automated...

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

I'm going to wish this endeavour a long and successful life of relative continuity!

Two other wishes: that they don't outsource the manufacturing of the designed devices to sweatshops in some...

Re: My condolences to the people of norway

It is hard to deal with such an incomprehensible act, but for the Norwegian and indeed Nordic or European youth dealing with it must be particularly hard.

Yet I'm convinced Norwaywill pull through...

Angry Re: gizmo5 closing. googleVoice -> gizmo SIP alternative?

So Google basically bought out Gizmo aka Sipphone and instead of improving the service they've now killed it for everyone except US-based Google-users while us outsiders can't even use their gtalk...

Re: The dream: Qt on Android

Exactly. Until recently Nokia - famed for their logistics - ruled over all other major handset makers (except Apple with their private garden) when they were all running the same "commodity platform"...

Red face Re: Hardware Engineers: Can we replace OMAP 3430 w/ 3630 :)

When this wishful debate took place, did anyone believe that a full year and a half later (and counting, and counting) the N900 would still be Nokia "flagship" device with its plainjane 65mn OMAP...

Re: My rescue plan for meego

Where did Meego (and before it Maemo) fail?

I believe technologically they were on track to beat the competition (iOS and Android) so the failure(s) lie elsewhere.

1) Lack of "present...

Re: The dream: Qt on Android

I've come to the conclusion that technology had little if anything to do with Nokia's decision to "partner" Microsoft or with their hiring of ms-elop to do the deed.

Nokia used to be driven by...

Re: Winners and losers

Needless to say, that encapsulates the failure of Nokia's management and board of directors. Six years ago they came up with the tablet revolution and since then they've merely treaded water while...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

You're absolutely right. Still, just like the proprietary and semi-proprietary OSes ship with a basic set of apps and features that are expected to be more secure and automatically update during the...

Re: So now could Nokia come back on the project they had before - to make a device under Maemo 6 ?

An open-source OS should be independent of any manufacturer's "ownership" or whims in any case.

Nokia was in the position to essentially kill Maemo because they kept near-total control over it in...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Since this MS/elop deal I've ceased to consider Nokia as a decent and well-intentioned company, but if they can still prove that their single sunset MeeGo phone is an open (i.e. fully community...

Exclamation Re: NOKIA Rejected Android in Favor of M$ - Eric Schmidt

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it have made sense for Nokia to accelerate their Qt/Meego strategy (for the latest multi-core ARM chips) while making Android apps work seamlessly too?

Google...

Re: NOKIA Rejected Android in Favor of M$ - Eric Schmidt

Of course Nokia's supreme strategists rejected Google.

They've spent untold billions of euros on their maps and services plan (see the Risku manifesto for background on some amazing screwups) but...

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

Of course you don't lose that in cash in real time, but stock works in mysterious ways. Including as currency in stock-swap based acquisitions and a part of remuneration packages.

If I still...

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

That's a lot of LOLling (but to be expected I suppose)...

Re: Maybe the unpleasant truth is that MeeGo really was too late and/or not good enough?

Whatever monies MS might promise to eventually pay Nokia (billion+ $$ ??) as part of this pact:

1) MS has already benefitted many times over by fully kneecapping the only proper Linux + Qt system...
