Brilliant! Works perfectly. As per your suggestion I added -extension RANDR at the end of the ARGS declaration and now everything is locked in landscape mode as I wanted.

df is the "disk free" command which shows you how much space you have on your disk. The -m option displays the result in megabytes.

Do you mean the OSD (on screen display) which mplayer can show while playing a video?
If so, try the keyboard shortcut o which should toggle the OSD options.
