I installed "themes-os07-14pt-0.1-1.deb" because it offers a dark theme. So dark in fact that the statusbar clock and some keyboard features are nearly blacked out. I can get by with those issues...

so i guess i can use a dc adapter/voltage booster (output = 6V, 380mA) to charge my n770 via pc usb at the same rate (ie. in 2 hours rather than 4 hours) as the ac adapter? i shouldn't destroy...

Yeah. So what exactly did you do to get this to work? It sounds much easier than the hub route, but it can't be as simple as a modified(?) Y-cable and "/dev/sda1".
