After a long time I found the source of the problem: apparently the "Large Status Bar Clock" has a memory leak that eventually consumes the available memory and somehow obstructs other applications...

1) Go to Control Panel > Personalization - Panels.
You can remove Web and Contacts there, leaving only Application, but as andrewfblack suggested Personal Menu is a good choice as an alternative....
