I'm trying to figure out why it cuts off; I think it may be related to sound levels because it doesn't do it as much if I hold the phone closer. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a good source...

Try using this .jar file and running it on your PC by double clicking it, then register this way, use the VOICE method.
Then go on your phone and do the Login method :)
