Re: [Announce] CSSU stable release

I see a lot here about reflashing, or reflashing if something goes wrong.

Does that mean it's not safe to install CSSU with a broken USB port?

(Regrettably I don't know how to get the port...

Re: N900 MeeGo CE Summer Edition Released

You can't flash if the USB port isn't working or has broken off.

As soon as you install something which prevents the device from booting, then you have to send it to the repair shop to get the USB...

Re: Porting Maemo/Meego to Android hardware - how plausible?

Meego seems a better bet in the longer term (though I like Maemo more personally). I found some people are making slow progress on porting Meego, with usual problems of closed source 3d drivers...

Porting Maemo/Meego to Android hardware - how plausible?

My USB port came out yesterday :( :( I spent hours looking on Ebay for a replacement N900, aware that Nokia Care is likely to take a long time holding my N900 before they fix/replace it, and as...

Re: linux-omap-2.6.32 git

Yes, very important. Two pins driving opposite logic outputs (or even same logic 1 output at different voltages sometimes), is often a good way to get 'the smell' (in my experience with other...

Re: power kernel 42 & fcam 1.0.7.1 problems

Thanks casketizer. I found myself in a beautiful sunny garden of a stately home, needing to take a photo... So I followed your advice and upgraded kernel + drivers on the spot, now the camera works...

Re: PR1.2 automatically sends SMS, registers phone with My Nokia. Privacy breach?

It should have been done by HTTP. All "My Nokia" users will have HTTP at the point where they first use any of the Nokia/Ovi services... And there is no point in being registered with My Nokia, not...

Re: power kernel 42 & fcam 1.0.7.1 problems

Is there an easy way to use power kernel 46 without enabling extras-devel, with all the potential instability implied by using that repo?

I'm using kernel-power 2.6.28-maemo42, with...

Re: camera-ui2 testers needed

BlessN900 has a mode where it takes pictures over a range of focal lengths, to composite them into a better picture.

So it is probably possible to control the focus, to some extent.

Re: What is the next phone after you loved N900

I'm really happy with my N900 and use it extensively as a business smartphone, PDA and as Linux device. There are lots of bugs and silly limitations, but on the whole it's excellent.

I find the...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

This is completely off-topic, but the theoretical upper limit of speed for JIT execution is faster than static native code, including ASM, due to context-dependent continuous optimisation.

We're...

Re: Why N900 failed on consumer market ?

Check out the BlessN900 camera app (from Maemo.org) and try all the settings. I found it improved the low-light quality enormously, taking clear pictures that look like normal light levels, in a...

Re: HELP! N900 Broken screen but need to retrieve memory.

If you usually have the wifi/gprs networking turned off (to save power during the day), and then your screen breaks, is there a way to login over openssh / x11vnc? E.g. some way to access it over...

Re: On the massive success of the Nokia Innovators contest at bringing us quality N900 software

This is my long-held understanding of GPLv2:

Nokia's T&Cs, with whomever, may imply that Nokia says they have no obligation to distribute source when they distribute GPL-covered binaries (or...

Re: still on pr 1.2 shud i bother wid pr 1.3 or stay on pr 1.2

There are some bugs and problems being reported with PR1.3. You might want to wait a few weeks and see what people have confirmed before deciding for sure.

One which particularly bothers me is...

Re: still on pr 1.2 shud i bother wid pr 1.3 or stay on pr 1.2

+1 to the mention of dyslexia etc.

Also it is way more than 1 second saved, if you are typing on a phone keyboard :) Why do you think nearly everyone who texts uses shorthand?

And then there's...

Re: Calender alarm problems after update

This sounds like a reason to potentially avoid PR1.3.
I don't want to be missing appointments; I depend on the calender every day. At least, best wait and see what other calendar bugs people find,...

Re: [NEWS]:Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is coming to Symbian & future to MeeGoo....Nothing about Maemo

I was very excited by the N900, and have little interest in the N9. If I am indicative, then you are wrong :)

I've long been enthusiastic about an open source mobile handset, and the N900 and...

Re: i've got my hands on the n8, not bad at all.

Just a quick note that with alternative software, the N900 camera can take *much* better pictures than with the default camera app. I am very impressed with the shots taken by BlessN900 in dark...

It's not a bad idea to use Ksplice's method or some other binary patching mthod to provide the enhanced kernel functionality, but I guess a one-off reboot isn't so painful anyway.

The main...

Re: Adobe Flash Player 10: When will the update arrive? Is it coming at all?

Interesting & good idea. Can it be compiled to native code? (as the GNU GCJ is able to compile Java to native code).

Even with good Java performance it will be difficult or impossible to get good...
