You can't flash if the USB port isn't working or has broken off.

As soon as you install something which prevents the device from booting, then you have to send it to the repair shop to get the USB...

Meego seems a better bet in the longer term (though I like Maemo more personally). I found some people are making slow progress on porting Meego, with usual problems of closed source 3d drivers...
