Still have some original batteries going but they start to break down and I suppose my laziness resulting of negligence towards charging them monthly has a lot do to with it.

It is not your problem, I too felt uneasy feeling something is not streamlined in those instructions but I am not "clever" enough or say interested or even up to date enough to know all those terms...

At first I thought this method worked for me, then I noticed my phone wasn't locked anyway. When I put the code, using fingerprint tap doesn't bypass the lock code screen.

OK, I got my Xperia X unlocked with the Sony given fastboot command, after moving from MacOS to Windows 10.
In windows the error was clearly my mistake as I got 2 digits switched in the unlock code...
