Even with the pre-installed google contacts app, you could add contacts locally. If you don't trust a google app, you could use an AOSP contacts app if you have an AOSP rom.

I don't think you can see if a person is online or not (have to open each apps themselves) but from the contact book you could see a list of social media attached to their contact and message them...

Yeah it's probably easy to flash the ROM, but reliability is a top priority for schools, so if anything happens I cannot afford the time taken to fix it. Already using a linux machine for school,...

Yeah that's true, normally I'd use it right away with my N9, but having this as my only device and having sketchy multirom, I'd rather wait first until multirom becomes stable.
