I've once seen a desk made from the front of the (old) Mini. Maybe that's the way forward? ;)

I was also hoping for a charging stand.

I think I'd like mine to be "landscape" where N900 slides into it from the side and thus plugs into the charging connector. Lanyard may get in the way...

things always on:
screen at 40% brightness
connected to WLAN, if available
connected to GSM/GPRS/3G where available

If you're "not qualified" then why wade at all into the entrails? Just use what's obvious. If insist on going past the "simple user" boundary then you should be prepared for what lies there. N900 can...

I always found that .documents "translates" to Documents, and "MyDocs" is just root for the lot (Images, Documents, Camera, ...)

I can successfully connect N900 to Nokia PC Suite using Windows XP SP3. I believe I have the latest version, too (I have upgraded fairly recently).

Have you checked you selected "PC Suite mode"...

Not possible. While off the cellular modem is off, too. Only the basic core system (clock, charging support, ...) is alive in the power off state.
