There is an application in Cydia, its called Signal, that does this exact thing.
It show the towers around you on a google map, and shows you...

I even looked at some coding for this, but didnt find the place where the transmitter is being shut down when a call is initiated.

You could stream the music from the iPhone to the N900 via bluetooth and then let the N900 transmit it.
But, first: I don't know if it can be done.
second: it will be a lot of power wasted since 2...

Well, you could just reflash your whole phone to the latest version using the maemo flasher.
(though this will most likely delete all your phone data)

Perhaps thats the case, but it might also be so you dont play very loud music and take photos without the shutter sound being heard.
