But it's not absurd to tell them to download and use WhatsApp?
It's absurd to ask them to register with jabber.ccc.de, but it's OK to ask them to register with skype.com?

E-Mail is, in fact, the perfect example in the context (another one is http, by the way). The reason why e-mail works the way it does and more recent open protocols failed to achieve the same level...
