If you are already root via a previous "sudo gainroot" command (ie you have a "#" prompt versus a "$" prompt"), you don't need to prepend your commands with another sudo. Just type the command as-is.

Yes, T-mo only has 3G only in the 1700/2100 band (speaking of the U.S., of course). AT&T uses the same tech as T-mo, which is an evolution of WCDMA.

Yes, I suppose that is a possibility. At&t does own some AWS band real estate in Nevada over which they might be piloting their LTE gear (which is indeed backwards compatible with HSPA if i recall...

Same here...have the unlimited web/text plan for dumb phones ($19.95) and I use internet2 for my APN and get 3g service. If I try the epc APN I get the upsell web page ;)

They're a little pricey in comparison to a usb-serial adapter, but functionality-wise I don't see why they would be any different. Google search term "serial bluetooth adapter" for more info.

Yes, you could do that but then you would lose the ability to easily plug-n-pray with windows devices (though maybe you in particular don't care about that).
