I wish I could find an actual picture of the AK8973 because in my imagination it would look something like the chip in this article: Atheros's AR6003 chip bring 802.11n to cellphones...

I don't know if this has been suggested yet but why not use the same digital compass that is currently in the Iphone 3GS (and all of the Android phones, I believe)? The unit is Asahi Kasei's...
