I use Postgresql for work and it's great no matter what you throw at it.

For the size of your database I believe that Mysql or even Sqlite can do the job.

I did a apt-get install modest-home-applet and the package was installed again even if it was already installed to begin with - weird!

After that, the email desktop applet was back on the desktop...
