I've gotten osso-statusbar-cpu to work nicely out of the box.

You need to enable it in the control panel after installing:

Control panel -> Navigation -> Status bar

I never have any problems connecting to relatively distant AP's. Maybe the reviewed unit had a bad WIFI antenna connection (since he/she had trouble connecting to all networks).

This is "normal" behaviour for Unix (like) operating systems (such as used on the 770).
