I actually gave up on the N900 for the job because of problems with the charging algorithm.
I'm using a mobile hotspot now.

It does when connected to a dumb charger.

USB networking wouldn't solve my problem though, since it's still charging from USB while connected to a USB host.
I can try to leave it in charge only...

I'm running it as a modem on a raspberry, connected via a powered hub. so there's still power available and the n900 is still "connected" and working as a modem.
The phone was set to PC-Suite mode...

I finally decided to reflash and the problem is gone.
After one whole day of uptime ohmd only used 12 seconds of cpu.

since a few weeks ago I have a problem with ohmd eating a lot of CPU and my battery draining much faster.
Ohmd usually leads the CPU-time statistics even before hildon-desktop or Xorg....
