Re: A Samsung I actually like?

Hi guys ... there is hope 4 us: I know (don't ask from where or wo ... ) Samsung sees future in Linux-based Mobile Linux for "Smarter Phones". Maybe MobLin? Or even Maemo? I don't know details, but...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

True only for part of people. Others like me just wonder about this deal that is quite bad and risky for Nokia.

I think it might be a normal thing if Nokia would offer WP7 phones as alternative...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

This doesn't matter really. Don't look at the lower end devices. Moore's law eats up low end devices with time. Nokia will need 1-2 years to get first WP7 phones. Unitl then, then-cheap SoC will be...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Hmm ... first of all the Deal will reduce Nokia's sales of Symbian phones and make more difficult future sales of MeeGo phones or devices. The claims of Elop are very vague, based only on some...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Well ... there were a number of Maemo devices (N770 ... N900) sold by Nokia - over the years, but without love and without being comitted to that OS.

And I remember, Nokia will deliver a Meego...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Right, some people here are open SW enthusiasts, and also not friends of Microsoft. But I don't believe this hits the point. I also own a Window Mobile device that I also like. The MS deal itself, as...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

You mean before the Microsoft deal. Did the deal change it? Symbian is more legacy, and the future is even more "vapourware".

True, unfortunately. Nokia management acted like a gambler in Las...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

I don't think "open SW or not" has anything to do with the problems at Nokia. Nokia in the end sells phones. And missed the train called smartphone - even now there is no real smartphone that is...

Re: Interview w/ Elop

Forget about smooth UI. Smartphones will have quadcores and >1GHz next year when first Nokia WP7 might arrive if not delayed. What will be next features after big screens, fotos, games? Maybe totally...

Re: Nokia Plan B

Yes, but it would not have been better with WP7.
Nokia HARDWARE also doesn't really look competitive for Smartphones.
- Screens small
- Cameras not as good as Samsung (Smile / Face detection? /...

Re: Nokia - Microsoft partnership (merged threads)

Apple? Nokia joked about Apple iPhone a few years ago!
HTC? Samsung? LG? All of them were small in mobiles a few years ago. It's not only innovation, but you must -in particular in consumer...

Re: 3-horse-race?

Only, if all Symbian / Maemo customers (now) will buy WP7.
Other calculation: they will distribute according market shares of OS, not changing relations between the 4-5 horses and leaving WP7 as...

3-horse-race?

Elop is right that there is now one horse less in race (Nokia).
However, I could 4-5 remaining horses, all more market share than WM7:

- Android (Linux-based)
- Apple iOS
- RIM
- WebOS...

Re: Nokia.."will continue with MeeGo"

Sad to hear that Nokia will solely count on old-aged Windows.
No innovative things such as Meego/Maemo any more.
Nokia sold its future.
Guess 20% loss in sales until next year.
New CEO then,...

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

Disable some repositories (of course not the Nokia ones ...).
You will need over 42MB in the root partition.

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

Hi,

I would not call the update a fail at all - it has some nice things:

- seems the sgx graphic acc. driver might be improvet
-> much more smooth browser and also multimedia functions
...

Re: Navit on N900

Hi all,

for sure OSM maps aren't complete. However, feel free to fix errors - finally it is an open approach. And free.

Also, Navit isn't at all that bad. With some knowledge and reading this...

Re: Full file system access: OpenSSH + WinSCP

Works fine with me :-)

I can recommend the following PC-Side software:

1.) Putty for login into N900. http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
2.) Filezilla for...

Re: Botnet is attacking garage.maemo.org and others

It seems they are not really making a DDoS attack, but try to hack some sites ...

List includes a number of sites, maybe to hide which they are really trying to hack.

Re: Can N900 get a virus?

Sure N900 can get viruses.
However, there are no scanners , at least from what I know.

Although porting a linux / PC scanner would be easy we would need signatures specific for ARM / Maemo.

Re: On maemo5 development (out of concern for nokia!)

There are much mare apps available for Maemo.
Just look at M2, M3, M4 repositories as well.

The root of the problem is that Nokia really renders these works useless by fragmenting Maemo users and...

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)

Then let's hope that n900 gets M5&M6.
And that it won't become "2 out of 4"

Lets hope that.
It seems they are already moving forwards to M6. Support for Maemo has no good history ...
