i have a similar problem. half the time my n900 says that i have no sim card inserted (shows a sim card symbol with a line through it). i think it is a problem with the phone not the sim as the sim...

Thanks for your response.
I do have a vodafone sim with (apparently) internet access - however it does not seem to work. I have heard that N900 might not work with vodafone. Perhaps I will try TIM.
