I don't think Kmplayer use an external config file so the only way to fix kmplayer is to modify the source. If you are okay with command line then you could use -utf8 tag:
mplayer -utf8...

got the images copied over using n9qt (didn't notice I still had 9.5.1 :D). I got same problem with the background though, the image with lines doesn't show up and I have black bachground instead....
