Re: Phones with preinstalled spyware CarrierIQ

The program is too big to fit on a SIM card. It's embedded in the device's firmware. One way to get around this (on Android anyway) is to use a custom mod such as Cyanogenmod that neglects to include...

Re: Gary Birkett (aka lcuk) RIP

I'd never met Gary, but his positivity around this community left an impression. He will be deeply missed.

My condolences for his family and loved ones.

Re: n900 usb networking

I don't think it's that people are necessarily unwilling, but maybe more that some questions that newbies think are simple are actually really complex. Or very easily googleable.

Like last month...

Re: n900 usb networking

I've never heard of that (successfully) being done before. It's definitely possible, but it sounds like one of those, "there are probably 5 easier ways to do it than that..." situations.

And I...

Re: 2 questions: Foreca vs OMWeather and desktops...

I use both. It seems like one of them is dodgy half the time. They take turns.

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

I've noticed this too, since the last update (and also with BlessN900). I've just been disabling rotation in the applet bar temporarily whenever I need to take a portrait pic.

There are a few...

Re: Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

That's exactly what I have - it rocks to have unlimited 3G for $10.

Also (everyone), the upgrade to PR 1.3 made no difference -- I think the poster at that other blog had his APN settings knocked...

Re: Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

That's really weird -- tmo doesn't seem to brand the S7, and the radio lacks UMTS band IV. I wonder if that's on bestbuy (for T-Mobile having its IMEI in its 'non-dumbphone' database).

Damn...

Re: Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

That's always been my impression - that MNOs identify your handset from a database of IMEIs provided by the manufacturer - and these databases almost always are limited (at least in the US) to...

Re: Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

Mostly going on hearsay, but the clearest thing I've found is here (http://thenokiablog.com/2010/10/25/nokia-n900-pr-13-update/) in the comments section.

I suppose either of those methods are...

Re: Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

Hey, did you get a plan, or just using it per-minute? Does that $1.49/day unlimited data work on the n900?

(you've upgraded to pr1.3, right?)

Operator Device Identification - eg, T-Mobile US recognizing it and cutting the $10/mo data plan

This is probably old news, in some sense, but I haven't had much luck googling specifics, just the occasional 'yeah, they recognize it as an N900 and block it (from using web2go)'

To clarify - I'm...
