Quite like that:
- Fast English ships vs large and slow Spanish Armada.
- Gun powder & rifles vs knights.
- Alcohol, disease & rifles vs Indians.
- Nuclear weapons.
- Quantum computer against existing cryptography (still to be proven)

Usually it is applied without mercy.
