thanks for the hints - I will give it a try to setup a cron job as user.
As whoami from the root cron job shows user, I don't think it will change much, but as surprising as some things work, who knows.

Regarding editor, I don't think I have nano installed, I'm fine with vi, but thanks a lot for the tip, I'm sure many will find it very useful.
