N900 rebooted and Voila! it took a while, but finally booted up to setup screen!

this is normal after a flash
1st boot takes longer.

how about giving backupmenu a shot?
the only shortcoming it has is that you have to have the same Kernel (Power) version on the target device (the one on which you want to do a restore) and the source device (the one from which the backup was taken)
if it is the same device, obviously, you have to get the same kernel version back before being able to use the backup
