This does not concern directly your problem, but I use Bluetooth PAN tethering to connect my Ipad to N900 with internet connection. It does not require any extra software on the Ipad, and only the tether.sh on the N900. The internet connection is automatic, I only have to initiate a normal bluetooth connection from the Ipad.
