Actually they are changing the API(https://developers.facebook.com/docs/apps/changelog), nothing gets shut down(besides the old API itself). And the new API is open, so it is up to whoever is interested to implement whatever is needed using the new API (in case of n900 and photo upload this is one of the thing I do now). Not that I like the situation, but blaming FB given that initial announcement was given 4 years ago seems a little bit of unfair to me - https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/616/ .
