As long as you can specify a device type like usb stick, sd card, external hd or NAS drive to boot from and you can secify the boot device order it should be possible, no?
It's often the case with Bay Trail-based tablets that UEFI firmware used can't access SD card due to lacking drivers or them not working properly. As workaround you can put kernel/bootloader to internal EFI partition, but have rootfs on SD card if needed.
