I will test my Leste device a bit later. But your experience sounds a bit strange. You may want to start again with a fresh image.

The SIM card inserted is not PIN protected and can provide 4G data connections.
Yes, there is no UI for managing SIM yet. However ofono works if you are willing to use terminal.
N900 hardware cannot do 4G by the way.
