Update: I was too impatient to wait delivery of new battery & charger. So, with the aid of rubber-bands I charged my N900 battery in my N95 phone. It still failed to boot, but it did connect in recovery/flash mode and with "flasher-3.5' I re-flashed with the UK PR1.3 image found by 'navifirm': RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.203.1_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin ....and I now have my phone back I've just restored from a backup and it is now happily installing/updating all the apps.
