Think about the rigidness and weight of the whole concept, how it is a fragmented and torn piece-of-os that needs all the horespower of most modern cpu's just to run at usable pace at all.

Mate, up until Marshmallow, Android could run on 512MB RAM. That's less than the latest version of iOS was compiled for at that point. It's gapps that bogs down the system. Yes, there are countless manufacturer-specific versions with their custom UIs and bloat. But LineageOS and a number of other community-built AOSP ROMs are truly lightweight.

The only thorn that could potentially screw the platform is if Google starts to embed gapps into a new version of Android without GPL/copy-left components, and makes gapps a prerequisite for the system to run. I'm sure people who couldn't care less about closed source software would be very happy with fuss free security updates, but for the rest of us it would be horrible.
