I also had repulsion first with Gnome 3, because it took away taskbar and Start-menu which I was used to. I decided to give it 2 weeks and then decide if I want to tweek it back. I started to like it after I learned to use Gnome Shell. Now I wouldn't switch back. It is much more quicker and intuitive way. Desktop icons I never liked, there some under.
