The key is, to set it up like this:

Application manager --> Application catalogs --> New
Catalog name: Maemo Extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel (--> DO NOT add /pool/free/libz/ as this will cause the 404 error)
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free

I have triple checked everything is entered correctly by the character but gives me 404 error.
