HAM is one of the most open user-facing apps in the OS; so I suggest trying to come up with a spec (or patch!) which can be run past the HAM developers on its official mailing list:

maemo-developers@maemo.org

Of course, getting a patch accepted and getting it in users' hands are two different operations. However, since Mer more closely tracks the upstream, it will - if nothing else - benefit Mer users.
