Re. 1, probably the server requires TLSv1.x (1.1, 1.2, 1.3) which AFAIK maemo never supported.

Re. 3, use apt-get. apt came later

No idea about 2.

(and sudo gainroot gives you root, so you can't sudo further, and it makes no sense .
