I'm pretty sure that it can be done.
I think the easiest solution would to power the receiver over the usb receiver of the n900 (this works) and use irrecord to record (this doesn't work because irrecord isn't build with the alsa-sound plugin).
So if anyone rebuild the package I could try it out I have everything laying around
