I kind of have to disagree a bit on this even though I feel that patenting and IP procedures in general have degraded far from the original intent of the said legalities.

A patent troll is an entity that just collects/buys/owns patents and actively seeks to enforce the them to squeeze money from other companies that need to use the patented technologies in their products.
Patent trolls do not create any added value, they exist just to shift money from place A to place B.

Nokia on the other hand does active research on RF technologies and licenses the results to other companies for use; this means it sells the fruit of the research for others to make money on their products. Now if it wouldn't do that, the other companies would have to do that research themselves, which increases development costs and time-to-market.
