Re the file browser, my display looks a bit different and have had no problems like the one you show. As you suggested, I did install the Gnome package... could that explain our different displays?

Re the mer upgrade warning... too late, I did screw up my mer image badly a couple of days ago because of that. I started all over again.

Have you succeeded in installing the Synaptic package?

Two things more. What's new with easy-chroot 0.1.7? For a customized xmodmap for my external keyboard, does it suffice to put my mappings in .Xmodmap-keymap? Do you run xmodmap automatically or do I do it by hand?
