I'm in the US and I can tell you that it's not a translation problem related to coming into the US. It's still being incorrectly used and, as you pointed out, a corruption of the phrase. My guess is that people who didn't understand the phrase to start with mis-spoke it repeatedly enough to make it "sound" right amongst themselves and their friends despite the lost meaning.
