I couldn't find this on bugzilla so I have filed a new bug, please vote for it if you have a similar problem:

I'd forgotten to vote for it myself, hope it's okay to do that...?

Hi there,

i also have this problem with the app manager not updating with WiFi. Is there any sort of a fix for it yet?

I have only had my phone 24hrs and this is a big problem for me as my data plan is €1 per day so this is not an option for me.

It seems very strange that this is not a more common problem. I have spent the last hour searching and this is the only thread i can find on the subject.

I am living in Ireland and i bought my N900 from Amazon (US) so it will be difficult to return or to deal with Nokia.

I have flashed with the new firmware and still no change, is there a way to restore to factory and delete everything on the 32gb drive and start fresh and see if that makes a difference?

Any help would be appreciated

The fix I've seen suggested for Irish users in particular is to change the DNS servers in your wifi configuration. Try the google DNS servers (see http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/)

Thanks for the tip Rob1n bu i think i have got it working now.

at least i think it was me!

I went to my wifi connection and into 'advanced settings' and

where it has the 'auto retrieve dns' box checked, i unchecked it

and entered my primary and secondary dns address' manually

and hit 'save' and then 'finish'

After i done this all of my repositories updated without a prob

Happy days!

Fwiw I have also had issues with timeout connections today. My husband has not...

My symptoms were as described here - i.e. app manager hanging when trying to update and unable to download any apps from the app manager. Same symptoms where using GPRS or WLAN. My log showed a timeout from the repository. I was unable to download apps either direct from the app manager or from the website. At the same time as I was hanging my husband (who had not tried any downloads) saw a 'failed to refresh data' error on his maemo.org repository.

I tried using the google dns as suggested here - no difference.

I disabled all my repositories and one by one enabled them. Hanging started when trying to connect to maemo.org or maemo, extras.

A ping from http://www.websitepulse.com on the maemo.org repository shows the following:

Website test results

URL tested: http://repository.maemo.org/extras
Test performed from: Seattle, WA
Test performed at: 2010-01-16 15:13:56 (GMT -05:00)
Resolved As:
Status: Cannot resolve hostname
Response Time: 0.000 sec
DNS: 0.000 sec
Connect: 0.000 sec
Redirect: 0.000 sec
First byte: 0.000 sec
Last byte: 0.000 sec
Size: 0 bytes
On re-enabling and trying a download I eventually got this error:
'application package not found'

In Summary: I believe this to be a problem (in my case at least) with the maemo.org repository, but in any case the n900 should not hang it should return an error and/or update those repositories it can reach.

Hope this is helpful. I know my issue is not exactly the same as the thread title but this is the only thread I could find

Similar problem here... Running on a Wi-fi connection with a ASUS WL-530G router with a disabled firewall. Tried manually setting the DNS servers to the google public dns servers ( 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) nothing happens ...
When run apt-get update through terminal all goes smooth and finishes but it goes REALLY slowly... same goes for pinging the repository site of maemo.. looses first 12-13 packets and then goes smoothly :O Though it seems the problem only occurs on my home wi-fi connection since I tried it briefly in a cafe and it didn't seem to have any trouble updating :/
The connection isn't slow, signal is perfect at home and there is no such problem when i ping the repository site through my PC which is connected over cable to the same router :S

Strange thing is that it sometimes manages to update itself >.<

Any help will be appreciated

Same here.

Works with cellular but not wifi. I have a strange feeling that the N900 just does not like certain routers. Me for example I can get mails wifi at work without problem, 2g and 3g home and office without problem.

At home clicking send & receive mail when connected wifi with n900 does absolutely nothing. not even the timing wheel showing that it is trying to fetch mail. Nothing at all. PC over WIFI no problem. Samsung Jet 8000 over WIFI no problem. So I know Port for IMAP is ok. But N900 does nothing. And I mean nothing`!

So my conclusion as often with soft and hardware. Learn to live with it. use 3 G and hope someday it will go away.

Regards Markus
