After trying everything to get arabic subtitles working on the N9 i ended up using gstreamer command line .

Code:

gst-launch playbin2 uri=file:///path/to/
movie.avi suburi=file:///path/to/
movie.srt

the movie load fine but subtitles don't show.

P.s : you might need to install gstreamer0.10-tools
