Last week I tried connecting the N900 using a micro USB cable I got from Nokia C6-01. It slowed down my laptop - PC suite mode. Does anyone know if somehow only there are any restrictions from using other versions of connectivity cables other than the one that came with the N900?

Nah, it's a standard USB to microUSB cable. I use one from a Samsung phone coz it slides in and out easier. So theres less wear on the N900's USB port.

Not really, I bought 1 from Ebay (Micro USB compatible with BB).
I could charge the N900, I could transfer data, but I am not able to use it to upgrade the firmware until I use the real cable.
