Did you install USB drivers or PC Suite before plugging in the phone? The phone's drivers cannot be found automatically by Windows by default.

I have PC Suite installed on my desktop computer. Don't really want to put it on my Netbook cas it's too big and clunky. Thought if I just plug in the N900 usb it would find drivers but, as you say, no such luck. Is there a work around that you know of?

If you don't want the PC Suite, you can just install the USB driver:

Note that you will not be able to use PC Suite mode, just Mass Storage mode.
