I was wondering if it is possible to use MS virutal pc with the Maemo SDK Virtual Image or do I have to install VMWare? What is so special about VMWare? (sorry if this sound trivial, I new to this ).

A Virtual PC image exists, so there's no real need for you to use VMware.

Check the wiki for more information:

Another option is VirtualBox - again the same page for info.

VMWare and Virtualbox are cross-platform and hence usable by a wider audience, Virtual PC is Windows only. Out of those two, Virtualbox is more user friendly and fun for "casual" use.
