Hi,

I would like to download one or more POI databases for maemo.
Please tell me what respository maintains updated databases, central database of POI by country, by categories in maemo format ?

I think you have to build your own POI. I did run across a perl downloader script that would download and build a POI database from google, but that's all I've seen.

I'm sure there is a Google DB that can be accessed. I know it can be parsed.

Doing so may be beyond the capabilities of M/M as we know it today.

There is a JAVA class floating around here that does just that. Why build a repository?

Build an app that converts a search output into a format that can be read by M/M. Save that GPX file on the tablet, then point to it as a poi file in M/M.

Edit: Both Yahoo and Google have search API's that can provide this info.

Hi,

my suggestion for POI databases repositories is not bad, as I use
$100 car navigation system coming with preloaded maps and POI databases.
Building POI databases on my own is ok but the same job has to be done by each user of maemo mapper, so why not to add new feature -
load POI databases from the Internet (Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, Micosoft Maps and free maps, free POI).

So if you meant by building POI db on my own adding new POIs to existing POI db it's ok but to build POI db of some hundred POIs is really a hard job and make no sense.

Ok. I am aware, there is a commercial market for POI dbs and some such POI dbs are protected against making a free copy.
So why not ask maemo users to build our own free POI dbs and have repository for such maemo built POI dbs ?

Any car navigation system is = embedded device + maps + routing + POI and more.

Searcheable POI db of updated POIs to be selected by categories is really necessary.
We have got maps, now we need POIs to be placed on such maps.

Interfacing POIs for live updates should work the same way map tiles live download works to get POIs for the downloaded map tiles at the ame time and if you use preloaded map tiles to get POIs preloaded too.

POI - Factory has some (for other GPS devices). But you can use programs to bring them into the database for maemo mapper or convert them for use with the Maps program.

There was another site that had a ton of free POI's, like all the walmarts, all the Fry's etc.
search is your friend.

If you are aware of any such place with tons of free POI's just give
a web link in mm's configuration file , exactly as it works with maps repositories.
No need to search maps repositories now.
Select&use works better than search.

I don't remember where it is here and am not interested enough at this time to look it up for you.
